Sensory Garden in Aalborg Øst

Take a break and indulge your senses - come and enjoy, smell, touch, and listen to nature in the sensory garden, which you can find at Thomas Manns Vej.

From community gardens to sensory garden

In 2019, campus area in Aalborg East was allocated for community gardens for students and staff. The project was a great success at the time, but unfortunately, in the last few years, only a few have wanted to take advantage of the offer.

The gardening team therefore wishes to bring new life to the area with a sensory garden, where users can experience a garden that not only creates recreational opportunities for relaxation and enjoyment but also offers a wealth of sensory impressions (smell, touch, taste, see, and hear).

In 2024, the garden was developed towards a more nature-oriented area with a focus on native species, which can contribute to increasing biodiversity in the area and complement other biodiversity initiatives that AAU has implemented on campus.

The ambitions for the sensory garden include:

  • Developing new nature and habitats for animals and plants and providing more food sources to increase the diversity of living organisms.
  • Being a showcase for biodiversity & sustainability – and serving as inspiration that it can also be achieved in users' own gardens at low cost and using recycled materials.
  • Creating a facility where we, as humans, approach nature rather than the other way around, where nature often has to be adapted to humans.
  • Making an effort for climate, environment, and biodiversity.
  • Contributing to the green transition of operations, gaining experience in transforming processes with negative climate impact to have either a neutral or positive climate effect.
  • Supporting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and contributing to a good physical study and work environment.

If you have questions about the above, you can contact the Green Service Team ( groenservice@adm.aau.dk)  or the coordinator for the physical study environment (fysiskstudiemiljoe@adm.aau.dk).
