Waste sorting
This is why it is important to sort bio-waste
Did you know...
that 1 kg. Bio-waste can make energy to boil 7 liters of water in an electric kettle!

-Bio and food waste
The following products are included in the bio / food waste sorting category:
- Food waste, raw and cooked
- Rice, pasta and breakfast products
- Meat, fish and bones thereof
- Bread and cakes
- Fruit and vegetables
- Spreads
- Eggs and eggshells
- Nuts and nutshells
- Coffee grounds and coffee filters
- Tea leaves and tea filters
Hazardous waste must be disposed of in dedicated waste rooms
We are working on a solution where office-generated hazardous waste (batteries, pens, small electronics) can be sorted in the waste rooms.
Other forms of hazardous waste, i.a. chemical waste must be handled as before, where the institutes have separate internal handling.
For questions, contact Campus Service.
Polystyrene must be disposed of in dedicated waste rooms
It is important that the polystyrene sorting is a clean and dry sorting, to ensure the most possible recycling of our waste.
The following clean products can be placed in the polystyrene container:
- Clean polystyrene from packaging (eg furniture, white goods)
- Jackopor
- Styrolite
- Styrofoam
- Sundolitt
- Transportation boxes
- Thermoboxes / Refrigerators
- EPS insulation
- EPS type plastic (expanded polystyrene)
- Food packaging of EPS, cleaned, eg foam trays
- Thermal cups of EPS, cleaned
- Polystyrene chips
If your polystyrene comes from a tray of meat, it is residual waste as it has been in contact with food and therefore is not clean.
If you have waste that is composed of several different materials, or if you are in doubt, please use the container for residual waste.
Glass waste must be put in dedicated waste rooms
It is important that glass waste is clean glass, to ensure maximum recycling of our waste. Therefore, rinse your glass container before it is sorted as glass.
Even if you use water to rinse the glass clean, it is better for the environment than if you have to produce a completely new glass from raw materials. However, only use the amount of water required to get the glass clean.
Although there may be a little dirt left in the glass after rinsing, the glass will still be reusable.
The following clean products must go into the glass container:
- All types of glass and bottles - both colored and clear glass - with the exception of brown glass for use in laboratories
- Whole bottles and household and drinking glasses, as well as glass shards thereof
Remember to sort lids and glasses separately.
If you have waste made up of several different materials, or if you are in doubt, use the container for residual waste.
Metal waste must be put in dedicated waste rooms
It is important that the metal sorting is clean metal products, to ensure the greatest possible recycling of our waste. Therefore, wash your tuna and mackerel can before it is sorted as metal.
Even if you use water to wash the metal can, it is still better for the environment than if you have to produce a completely new can from raw materials.
However, only use the amount of water required to get the can clean.
The following clean products may go into the metal container:
- Cans of tuna, cod roe and mackerel
- Pure tinfoil
- Metal cutlery
If you have waste that is composed of several different materials, or if you are in doubt, use the container for residual waste.
Cardboard waste must be put in dedicated waste rooms
It is important that the cardboard is clean and dry to ensure the greatest possible recycling of our waste.
Cardboard boxes must be folded before they are put in the container.
The following clean products must go into the cardboard container:
- The cardboard tube from paper towels and toilet paper
- Boxes and cases from e.g. washing-up tabs, egg trays, light bulbs, batteries, etc.
- Shoe boxes
- Price tags
- Postcards
You can leave tape, staples, labels etc. stay on the cardboard.
If you have waste that is composed of several different materials, or if you are in doubt, use the container for residual waste.
Waste paper must be placed in the printer room
It is important that the paper is clean and dry to ensure the greatest possible recycling of our waste
The following clean products may go into the paper container
- Newspapers
- Weekly magazines
- Advertising
- Envelopes
- Office paper
- Gift wrap
- Books
If you have waste that is composed of several different materials, or if you are in doubt, use the container for residual waste.
Plastic waste must be placed in dedicated waste rooms or in the waste batteries that have been set up
It is important that the plastic waste is pure plastic to ensure the greatest possible recycling of our waste. Therefore, you must clean your plastic before sorting it. Therefore, rinse your plastic before it is sorted.
Even if you use water to rinse plastic clean, it is still better for the environment than if you have to produce a completely new product from raw materials.
However, only use the amount of water required to get your plastic clean. Although there may be some dirt left after rinsing, it will still be reusable.
The following clean products may go into the plastic container:
- Containers and cans from dishwashing and milder cleaning agents
- Boxes/containers for storing food
- Plastic trays and bags from food products, drink cans and plastic bottles without a deposit
- Serving and storage bowls made of plastic
- Plastic bags, also the small ones from, for example, sweets
- Wrapping plastic from, for example, cut flowers or food
- Bubble wrap
- Plastic foils
- Cutlery made of plastic
If you have waste that is composed of several different materials, or if you are in doubt, use the container for residual waste.
Residual waste is the sorting category reserved for everything that you cannot recycle by sorting in the other containers.
Many may be in doubt as to whether they sort their waste correctly. If you are in doubt, it is better to throw your waste in residual waste than to sort it incorrectly, as you risk destroying an entire waste sorting that suddenly cannot be recycled.
Waste that is composed of several different materials that cannot be separated must be placed in the container for residual waste.
Residual waste must be combustible
Everything that ends up as residual waste must be able to be burned. That is the main rule. Therefore, it is clearly best if you recycle glass and metal in the correct waste categories, as both metal and glass require a lot of energy to burn.
Unclean sortings, such as napkins with leftover food, a pizza tray with oily residue or wet paper belong in residual waste, as they are no longer pure paper or cardboard products.
